WHEN THEY CAN'T HAVE KIDS

Image
Nelly Ohuche July 2020 Few years ago, on an edition of one of my radio shows in Abuja 'Family Focus', I discussed the theme 'When they can't have kids'. I had Lucy Dickson, Founder Valedo International Charity Center and Doctor Kate Onoja of Grabbo Fertility Clinic. This for me was a deliberate personal inquisition to understand this very agonising issue for women and having also watched close relatives and friends struggle through it hence, it is a very sensitive topic. As a woman, I know menstrual cycle comes with all sorts of stress, pain and discomfort monthly, and we would gladly trade it to the men, yet its consistency shows you have either been a good girl all month long or you've played 'smart' despite the escapades. To the spouse or partner, it means all is well, we are safe, no "I missed my period" telemundo. Ironically, at a period in time in life for a woman, she looks forward to missing her period as this would then signify fertili

COVID-19 UPDATE: LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT RE-STRATEGISES ON ITS SOCIAL STIMULUS PALLIATIVE MEASURES.

Image
The palliative programs designed to assist the indigent and aged as announced by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu prior to the restriction of movement came with a lot of applaud. This social stimulus relief was to cater for an initial 200,000 specified beneficiaries within Lagos State, however this laudable initiative from all indication was hijacked by the very people who were to see to the seamless distribution. This is, to say the least, sickening and an act of wickedness in such a critical time as this in the history of the world.  Despite this set back, the Lagos State Government is determined, more than ever, to deliver on their promise to bring succour to the people. It is to this end that the Lagos State Government stated during a Press Briefing on Saturday on its progress on containing the COVID-19 virus its next line of action. “My dear Lagosians, you will recall that when we began this battle, I promised you that the vulnerable and indigent segme

MILITARY SUICIDE: AN OBVIOUS CASE OF PTSD. By Nelly Nwaka' Ohuche

Image
It is disheartening the recent report of a serving Army Corporal who opened fire on his colleagues killing four (4) and injuring two (2) others before shooting himself.  Stories have surfaced about the reason for his action however it must be emphasised that whatever the reason was, it was just a trigger to an already existing issue.  Serving at the Theatre Command Operation Lafiya Dole, Maiduguri, North-East, Nigeria where the insurgency is at its worse, it is clear he has been exposed to war possibly over a period of time hence his actions most definitely presents as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Last June 2019, the Green Heroes Foundation, GHF organised a symposium on 'Insurgency in the North-East and the Effect of PTSD on Soldiers, their families and the Society' held at NAF Officers Mess, Abuja. It was attended by high ranking military personnel's and the need for adequate support for Soldiers mental welfare especially those who have gone through w

SUICIDE: THE SILENT SCOURGE written by Nelly Nwaka' Ohuche

Everyone prays to experience the sunny sides of life, everyone hopes for the good of life and while we all hope, sometimes against all hope, and we pray to see a rainbow in our skies to give us a glimpse of hope that our prayers and desires will someday see the light of day. Unfortunately, the endless wait sometimes ripples into frustration and depression, then, sadly drives some to the edge, the edge of suicide.  Every suicide is a mystery; not just for the one who committed the act but to the ones left behind to, not only understand the mystery behind it, but to live with the pain and stigma that trails it. Suicide doesn’t end the pain; it just transfers it to another. While Africans and Nigerians especially sarcastically claim that it is un-Nigerian to commit suicide, yet it has become rampant, though under reported. There has been various cases of suicide lately especially amongst young people. Nigerians and Lagosians particularly will not forget in a hurry the case
