UPDATE ON THE ON-GOING REPATRIATION OF NIGERIANS FROM LIBYA
-Nelly Nwaka' Ohuche
There has been a deliberate and concerted effort on the part of the Nigerian government in conjunction with NAPTIP in the evacuation of Nigerian Nationals caught up in the web of slave masters in Libya, North Africa.
The Libya horror of slavery which took a report from CNN for the world to have a peep into the sickening crisis frightened the world and enacted a global cry out against human trafficking. Unfortunately, Nigerians were a part of these slaves stuck up in Libya.
In an effort to assess the situation first hand, a special Federal Government delegation departed Abuja last Wednesday 3, 2018 for Tripoli, the Libyan Capital. The delegation was led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama and included the Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Dame Julie Okah-Donli, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Diaspora Matters, Hon. Abike Dabiri Erewa amongst others. This high-powered delegation went on a fact finding mission to ascertain the level of enslavement of Nigerians in Libya, to plan the mass evacuation of Nigerians trapped there, engage with the Libyan Authorities, Nigerian officials and citizens living in Libya as well as International organisations working on migration issues in Libya.
In a recent Press Release by Josiah Emerole, Head, Press and Public Relations (NAPTIP), the NAPTIP DG, Dame Julie Okah-Donli says the Agency is ready to assist victims of human trafficking who will be amongst those returning to Nigeria to get properly reintegrated back into the Nigerian Society.
According to her, ’’We will also help them with all the necessary tools to sustain themselves including vocational training and education assistance. This will be done with assistance from Government, Corporate bodies and the international organizations”. She advices that “…all hands must be on deck now, because doing nothing will affect all of us”.
In the light of this, the Little Ambassadors of Nigeria in their effort to educate people in rural areas on the dangers of human trafficking and abuse will be touring nine (9) communities in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State.
This is therefore a call to all and sundry to do whatever it takes within their circle of influence to carry out advocacies and disseminate needed information where ever they can to fight against trafficking. Let’s make efforts to be our brothers’ keeper.
